Nas has released a music video for his track “Cops Shot The Kid,” which was featured on his latest album ‘Nasir.’ ‘Nasir’ was the rapper’s 11th studio album. The track discusses racism and police brutality and samples Slick Rick’s 1988 track “Children’s Story.”
The video spans a brief 2 minutes and 50 seconds. It depicts a young black adolescent running from and being shaken and violently interrogated by the police. The visual switches between these depictions and Nas rapping the powerful lyrics to the track. The “Cops Shot The Kid” video also features a cameo by Slick Rick, a nod to the sample the song takes from his track.
Nas has been vocal with his views on police brutality beyond just this one track. In the 16-minute short film that accompanied ‘Nasir,’ he also touches on the issue, in addition to his experiences growing up in Queensbridge. It is likely that we will be hearing more of the veteran artist’s views on these topics and many more, as he is reportedly working on another album. He stated:
“It’s another album that I already had been working on before [NASIR]…Since I did this, I gotta do something that, you know, goes in another direction a little bit. So I’m finishing up the next one.”
