There is no doubt that you have heard music from this next producer, as he has had his hands in pages of impressive works over the past two decades. Salaam Remi is an American record Producer from Queens who has been the main producer for artists like Nas, Nelly Furtado, and Amy Winehouse.
With a studio musician as a father, the idea of a career in music was not unfamiliar in Remi’s childhood. The New York-based hip-hop producer first started in the music field as a keyboard player on Kingdom Blow, by Kurtis Blow in 1986. In just a few years, he was already mixing and producing records, leading up to his first full hip-hop production in 1992 for the group Zhigge.
Years later, Salaam Remi has racked up dozens of productions for some of the biggest artists in today’s music industry, as well as an impressive personal discography. Through his work, Remi was able to meet one special client in particular: Amy Winehouse. In 2002, Winehouse and Remi began working together for the majority of her records, producing some huge projects such as Back to Black, her second and very memorable studio album. Remi states “The way that Amy and I always created was, she would write and we would toss ideas around.” His knack for working with incredible talent continues. By late 2008, Salaam Remi had a part in countless projects across the maps, including ones with Jazmine Sullivan, Nas, Free, Nick Harrison, Lemar, Noel Gourdin, Julian Perretta, Leona Lewis, and much more. Remi also began to branch out into film, showing the true range of his skills.
In 2013 alone, Remi’s own album ONE: In The Chamber took the title as one of the four Grammy nominations he received. With 12 tracks and features from names such as Akon, Ne-Yo, and Jordin Sparks, the album explores different corners of R&B and rap while holding onto traditional themes of love. One: In The Chamber gave way for Remi to break from his usual spot behind the scenes to center stage.
Ever on the rise upwards, Remi once again pushed the limits to take on the executive position of his own label, Louder Than Life. According to Remi, starting his own firm was a way to use his success and skills to utilize the talents of other artists who don’t have access to the kinds of resources he has, but still have the talent. “I help the artist see how they can become stronger and I help the label understand how to market them.” he states in an interview with Music connection. Through the label, Remi has been able to exercise his skills with many different artists in the Sony labels. The way he has been going over the past two decades, it looks as if there is no stopping him now. He just recently collaborated with Miguel on a new single “Come Through and Chill”, released in June. He also recently started a new campaign titled “Do It For The Culture” where NO PANTY (Nitty Scott, Bodega Bamz, Joell Ortiz), The Champagne Flutes, Sex All Summer, Miraa May, Elle Varner, Mack Wilds, Miguel, and BJ The Chicago Kid comes together for the project.
