Donald Glover took to the stage as Childish Gambino to headline an electric set at Coachella this past Friday (4/12). In addition to the performance’s theatrics, Gambino also used a good portion of his time on stage to talk to his fans. He spoke about the realities of life, the mindset of millennial, and the passing of three important figures in his life.
Gambino revealed during an earlier performance that he had recently lost his dad. Discussing it on stage pushed him to tears. During his Coachella performance, a similarly moving speech also made the rapper break down with emotion.
“I lost my dad this year, we lost Nipsey, we lost Mac. What I’m starting to realize, all we really have is memories at the end of the day, that’s all we are. All we are really is data. You pass onto your kids, you can pass it on to your friends, your family. The problem with us, millennials like everybody here we have so much data, like, we know what’s going to happen.”
Gambino proceeded to caution his audience that they need to make the most their time here, because tomorrow is not promised. With tears in his eyes, he stated:
“There’s a hundred thousand of you out here right now. There’s a good chance that some of y’all—at least one of y’all—won’t see next week. So what I’m saying is while you’re here, while we’re here, feel something and pass it on.”
Towards the end of the set, Gambino took on a more inspirational tone. He proceeded to dedicate his next song to “everything we’ve lost and everything we stand to gain in the future,” and motivates the cheering audience, saying:
“The future is now and you guys are the future.”
Gambino’s inspired speech and the confident he oozed during his set made his Coachella performance truly unforgettable.
