Rapper and 90s sitcom “Fresh Prince of Belair” star Will Smith has been back at it in the world of music with slight controversy. World Cup released the song on Friday –– the fast-paced dance-tune takes influence from Latin American music. Critics of the song wonder how it ties in with the World Cup, stating that the overall sound and feel don’t have much to do with the host country, Russia. “Live it Up” has been compared to Shakira’s “Waka Waka” theme for the 2010 World Cup in South Africa.
However, many have found that the song is fitting. The ideal that the World Cup is about bringing the world together is affirmed in the chorus “One life, live it up/ ‘Cos we got one life.” Nicky Jam and singer Era Istrefi, who are Puerto Rican and Albanian respectively, join Will Smith on the track –– each artist involved represents a nation that won’t be at the cup. Listen to the “Live it Up” now, on Spotify and Apple Music.
