British singer and songwriter Mahalia just released her newest project, an EP entitled Seasons. The EP consists of five tracks, including her single “Surprise Me,” which released earlier this month.
Mahalia has been writing music since the age of eight. She officially entered the music industry in 2012, when she signed to Atlantic Records at the age of thirteen. She released her first EP, Head Space, in mid-2012. Her second project, Never Change-EP, did not come until 2015, as she decided to take a break from music to finish school. In 2016, she came out with her debut album, Diary of Me. This year she has been very active on the music scene, releasing various singles, including “No Reply,” “Proud of Me,” and “I Wish I Missed My Ex,” which gained a lot of popularity this past summer. Her 2017 track, “Sober,” was recently featured on season three of the HBO hit show, Insecure.
Mahalia describes Seasons as a progression through a relationship. In an interview with Complex, she stated: “My whole life, I’ve always written when I felt something deeply about something or somebody. And so I’ve always referred to it as ‘seasons’ of my life, you know? Like, ‘That was that season, and now this is this season. That guy was in that season.’ And so with this EP, I wanted to do a five-track—or five-stage—idea of a relationship.”
The EP highlights Mahalia’s melodious vocals and neo-soul style, as well as her unique pen skills. Her lyrics evoke imagery of changing seasons mirrored by the progression of a relationship from the first night to the point where Mahalia experiences closure. The first track, “One Night Only” featuring Kojey Radical, features a monologue by Mahalia, which suggests that the project came from a very personal space.
The heartfelt lyrics coupled with the mid tempo beats on Mahalia’s third extended play make for an interesting listening experience. She recently announced a tour through Europe this fall, hitting the UK, France, Germany, and many more.
