Ella Mai’s highly anticipated, self-titled debut album released today. ‘Ella Mai’ features the artist’s hit singles “Boo’d Up,” and “Trip,” along with her recently released track “Whatchamacallit” featuring Chris Brown.
Ella Mai began her public musical career in 2014, when she was featured on The X Factor UK as part of a group named Arize. Though the group did not make it past the first auditions and disbanded shortly afterwards, Mai did not give up on her musical career. She began making short covers of popular songs and posting them on Instagram. These covers eventually got her noticed by DJ Mustard, and he immediately signed her to his Interscope Records branch, 10 Summers Records. She released two EP’s in 2016, ‘Time’ in February and ‘Change’ in November.
Mai saw success as a result of her third EP, ‘Ready.’ The EP originally released in February of 2017, and featured Ella Mai’s breakout single “Boo’d Up.” The single did not rise to popularity until over a year later, and is now considered one of the biggest tracks of 2018. “Boo’d Up” reached platinum status back in June, and was re-released as a part of Mai’s debut album. Mai’s second hit single, “Trip,” also featured on her debut project, was released in August along with her tour dates. With her swift rise to fame came high expectations of her debut album.
‘Ella Mai’ did not disappoint. It is a compilation of the soothing vocals and swaying melodies that we saw in her previous work. Mai has a soul for R&B music, evoking romanticism in her lyrics that is often lost on today’s radio stations. She also features monologues at the end of various songs, as she had done previously on her EP’s. These trademark monologues give the album a personal touch, and further solidify the authenticity behind her catchy tracks.
Ella Mai’s debut album features fellow R&B artists Chris Brown, H.E.R, and John Legend, and includes her 2017 single “Naked” as a bonus track. You can catch Ella Mai on the American lap of her tour through November 8th.
