The producer known for his bass intensive hip-hop production style, DJ Mustard, is expanding his repertoire to be arid and atmospheric. This new divergence in sound is reminiscent of EDM and seen mostly in the new single, “Anywhere” that dropped on May 11th. The new single featuring Nick Jonas also marks a new style of collaboration for the producer who is used to artists like Kid Ink and Jeremih.
The song, laden with heavy amount of reverb from the beginning, starts out scarce with atmospheric noise and Nick Jonas in the forefront. The beat drops in and starts to sound like a dancehall tune with synth-pop influences. Drawing from his hip-hop roots, DJ Mustard keeps his drum sound with that classic 808 foundation, throwing in the occasional sixteenth-note hi-hat fill. Stream “Anywhere” now on Spotify.
