Amerie took to social media yesterday (Oct. 18th) to announce that a surprise double album would be releasing today. The albums, ‘4 AM Mulholland’ and ‘After 4am,’ are seven and six tracks long, respectfully. This is Amerie’s first studio LP since her 2009 project ‘Love & War.’
Since the release of her last album, a lot has changed for the singer and songwriter. She parted ways with Def Jam Records in 2010. As an independent artist, Amerie released an EP entitled ‘Drive’ on Soundcloud. ‘Drive’ acquired over 100,000 streams within the first three days of its release and was named one of the best R&B albums of 2016 by Rolling Stone. In 2017, Amerie released a book entitled ‘Because You Love To Hate Me,’ . The cherry on top of all the changes occurring in her life was the birth of her first child, a baby boy named River, back in May of this year. Amerie has kept her fans satiated with a YouTube channel, on which she gives occasional life updates as well as creating other content.
The double album is the long-awaited return of Amerie’s soulful R&B sound. It is evident that this project was personal to her, as she worked on it amidst a time of great transition in her life. Along with this transition came a lot of freedom as far as her creativity and sound. In an interview with Billboard, Amerie reveals:
“Everything on the album was recorded from when I didn’t know I was pregnant to eight, nine months [along]. “Not a Love Song” and “The Wall” were around then. I was doing little sexy rolls on those tracks. [Laughs] I record, engineer and do my own vocals and rough mixes. It was really creatively freeing.”
‘4am Mulholland’ and ‘After 4am’ were a pleasant surprise for Amerie fans. You can stream both sides of the double album below!
