Vince Staples surprised fans yesterday (Nov. 2) with a new album, simply titled ‘FM.’ The album comes about a year and a half since the release of his sophomore project ‘Big Fish Theory.’ His new joint ‘FM’ was announced earlier this week via Instagram. Staples posted a picture of a kid holding a director’s clapperboard, with a caption stating “New Vince Staples.” The image ended up being a snippet from his music video for the track “FUN!”.
The album came and fans of the California-native rapper were thrilled. ‘FM’ is 11 tracks and about 22 minutes long. The primary producer of the project was Kenny Beats, but we also see work from Hagler, CuBeatz, and KillaGraham. Features on the album include Jay Rock, Buddy, Kehlani, Earl Sweatshirt, Ty Dolla $ign, E-40, Kamaiyah, Tyga, and Vonnie.
Along with the album, Vince Staples also released the music video for the track “FUN!” featuring E-40, from the album. The video is a fun play on Google Maps. It depicts different scenes occurring as the someone moves through the video like Google Maps, at some points stopping and watching the scene come to life as Staples raps the lyrics to his song, and at others only seeing snapshots like you would on the actual app.
The album itself is brief but Staples fits in a lot of bars within that 22-minute run time, especially considering that the album contains two interludes and a skit. Staples essentially brings out his signature flow, while also incorporating elements of an L.A. based radio station entitled Big Boy’s Neighborhood, which justifies the title “FM”. The interludes of the album play-off like a snippet of a new song that is about to premiere on a radio station. It was interesting choice for Staples to incorporate this into his album and definitely makes the project stand out.
Staples tweeted shortly after the album’s release insinuating that we should be hearing more from him soon. He said: “Thank you and enjoy. We got more coming soon..”
For now, enjoy Vince Staples’s ‘FM’ below!
