The MTV Video Music Awards are back. The annual event seeks to showcase the previous year’s biggest hits, artists, and, of course, music videos. Scheduled to take place on August 26th at 8pm in Newark, New Jersey’s Prudential Center, MTV has officially announced their list of nominees for this year’s event.
To no one’s surprise, big name artists such as Drake, Cardi B, Ariana Grande, and Halsey have snagged up a few nominations, including artist of the year, song of the year, and video of the year. Newer artists have also entered the ranks this year, including Billie Eilish and Lil Nas X have also been nominated for some of this year’s biggest awards.
This year’s nominees for Artist of the Year lack a hip-hop presence, but will nonetheless be a competitive feat. The nominees this year are Halsey, Cardi B, Ariana Grande, Billie Eilish, the Jonas Brothers, and Shawn Mendes. Ariana Grande has had quite the year, with the release of several hit singles and an unexpected album release just six months after her project ‘Sweetner’ released. Billie Eilish has been garnering a lot of attention with her sophomore album ‘WHEN WE ALL FALL ASLEEP, WHERE DO WE GO?’, from which she pulled her biggest single “Bad Guy” from. However, the Jonas Brothers present competition, as they have just made their return to music as a group. It goes without saying that Cardi B, Halsey, and Shawn Mendes have maintained a position as prominent artists since they debuted.
This past year has been an overall good one for music. It will be interesting to see how these tracks and artists measure up against each other in the award ceremony. Be sure to tune in on August 26th at 8pm to find out who the winners are!
