After being a strong and influential contributor to hip-hop music for over two decades, Lil Wayne will be honored at the BET Awards this year as the recipient of the 2018 I Am Hip Hop Award. The award is an honor celebrating the timeless legacy and impact of an artist’s work, and is a well fitting honor for the veteran rapper.
Lil Wayne began his rap career at the age of nine, and was signed to Cash Money Records by the age of 12, making him the youngest rapper ever signed to the label. His first hit was a feature on Juvenile’s 1999 single “Back That Azz Up,” at the ripe age of 16 years old. Wayne’s debut solo album, “Tha Block is Hot,” which he released later that year reached platinum status. He went on to create Young Money Records, a label to which he signed various hit artists including Drake, Nicki Minaj, Tyga, and Gudda Gudda. Nearly 30 years later, Wayne has contributed innumerable chart-topping hits in the form of singles and features alike.
Lil Wayne was recently featured on the cover of Billboard magazine and did an exclusive interview with Dan Rys. In the interview, he discussed his potential for making a comeback to the hip-hop scene, which has reignited rumors of the potential release Wayne’s highly anticipated album, “Tha Carter V.”
The BET Awards will be held on October 16th in Miami. Be sure to tune in at 8pm to watch Tunechi receive this honor, and see the rest of your favorite hip-hop artists!
