A couple of weeks ago, Lovethistrack.com acknowledge the top ten artists in Chicago. The list was filled with both upcoming and established artists. Well, it’s that time again, and this time around, we took it to the streets. We wanted to spice things up, so we reached out to the community and supporters for input. We team up with a group of bloggers, DJ’s—particularly DJ Campaign, fans, and even a couple of indie artists to formulate the Westcoast’s Top ten.
While there were numerous of elements that impacted this list, our main focus was to combine everyone’s opinions, ideas and suggestions, so that we could properly point-out the versatility and growth of the Westcoast district. Each artist is unique and collectively, we made sure we placed emphasis on that. Whether they scream it or not, we can assure you that every artist on this list is a California Native. Without further ado, let the count down begin.
This guy right here doesn’t need an introduction, nor do we have to remind you of his hip-hop contributions. All we ask is for the non-believers to not “kill his vibe”. Since the TDE representative burst on the scene, he has been every bit of consistent. To those who questioned his business moves, please understand that Mr. Lamar is to busy reaching different audiences, expanding his fan base, making a variety of music for all genres, and speaking on behalf of others, in regards to police brutality—all while still representing that West coast sh*t. We love, salute, and respect what he does, which explains why-whenever the surveys were sent out, his name was one of the ones that was most requested.
This next dude is something serious. If you have been monitoring his music like we have, then you should already know what time it is. We could brag about his leaked track, Anybody but we will save that for later. Instead, lets talk about why he’s featured on Lovethistrack’s Top Ten. As we already know, Fresh Veggies will be hitting the market September 25, 2015, with Live & Grow and in a world where the majority rule—collectively, we all feel the same way about Veggies. If you view his Discography and can’t decide what to listen to in the meantime, simply go to YouTube and type in She in my Car. If that don’t peak your interest, then check out the joint with DeJ Loaf. Whatever you do, just know that Veggies carries that West coast sound that the game needs.. Although it’s too early to compare him to anyone, it’s quite obvious who influences his music. Therefore, we foresee a bright future for this dude.
Now! You know we couldn’t do a top ten without adding some females to it. In 2014, when Tinashe hit the scene with 2 on—-that had to be the song of the year! That’s one of them songs you could listen to for hours and never get tired of it. Not to mention, the girl can dance and sing, that alone explains why other artists like Ty Dolla $ign and Kid Ink don’t hesitate to collaborate with her. Despite her low album sales in the past, Tinashe is still gone be a winner because of her ability to spice up a song or even “eye candy” a video, which is why she’s one of Lovethistrack’s top ten.
This next young lady is not only musically talented, but she is also responsible for a phrase that most women have now adopted and added to there list of things that they want in a man—he gotta eat the groceries also. Because of Jhene’s verse on Omarion’s- Post to Be, the grocery department has been booming. Although it’s optional, it’s probably something that the fellas should consider trying because at the rate it’s moving, it could maybe one-day become a deciding factor in a relationship. Standing at 5’2, Aiko, whose alter ego is J.Hennesey, possesses a slick flow that should not be slept on. She has admitted that she likes to rap and can be rather aggressive; we saw a glimpse of this on The Worst where she somewhat mimics Jay-z’s verse from Excuse me. Steaming up the billboard charts, being nominated for Grammys, plus good album sales—Aiko has continuously put in work, which is why she’s one of the hottest in the Westcoast family.
Ok, now this list just keeps getting more interesting. This section of music apparently has a lot of elements. They have the ladies; they have hot-spitters and conscious rappers—why not have a DJ as well, right? Making his way to the top ten lists is DJ Mustard. Of course, we aware of his well-know slogan, “Mustard on the beat ho”, which you probably, if not already, will hear on a variety of tracks. Tracks such as Rack City, Main Chick, 2 on and Toot it and Boot it (which he co-wrote with Ty Dolla $ign) are some popular ones. Although Mustard produces music for rappers from other regions, he makes sure that he takes care of home as well. Meaning, if you have heard music from other Westcoast artists, just know that it probably was “Mustard on the beat ho”.
There is no way we could do a top ten without featuring YG. For a while, he has been holding down the fort while his colleagues were taking care of other things. His album titled My Krazy Life did well when it dropped. He is now in the studio working on his second project Still Krazy and has already released a single titled Twisted fingerz. YG is beloved for his loyalty and dedication to his music, his colors, plus fans. His whole swag has Westside written all on it, from the long socks, video-cameos with him chilling on a bicycle, down to his dialect. Some call him YG but here at lovethistrack.com, we call him one of the “Head Honchos”.
Ty Dolla $ign
Whenever you assemble a team, certain elements should be included, especially if your trying to win—which brings us to this next artist. If we don’t know anything else about Ty Dolla $ign, we know that he can sing his ass off. He has created and assisted some well known songs such as Or Nah, Play no Games and Paranoid. He has recently shot a video for his new single Drop that Kitty which features Tinashe and Charlie XCX—-and no, neither one of them had to “ make that a** clap for young dolla sign” either, instead, the ladies were both eye candy throughout the whole video. His ability to craft certain music to convey a particular sound just adds more depth to the West coast roster. Cleary, he is “what’s the game been missing” and several people often refer to him as a reincarnation of Nate Dogg. Do you agree?
Since Kid Ink came on the scene, he has made his own lane. His flow is more of a commercial style that would sound good on any song with a high tempo beat. His two latest singles Body Language and Be real have been in heavy rotation on the radio. He makes it well known that he represents Westside. He is often compared to Drake at times. Despite all of this, Kid Ink just adds more versatility to his district. Serving as a heartthrob for the ladies along with putting smooth lyrics over banging beats, expect to see Ink for a while.
Coming in at number 9 is rapper Schoolboy Q who is also a member of TDE. Now, often times, Q has received some criticism because some don’t understand his music. However, clearly, that has to be from the minority because when he first dropped Oxymoron, he sold 139,000 copies the first week. Not to mention, that he is in the process of dropping a follow-up album that should be released sometime this year. The thing about Q is that he has his own sound. He is so creative with his art that the simple-minded may not understand his level of thinking. His music challenges your IQ and it doesn’t take a rocket scientist to see the Schoolboy’s talent. We see it, we like and so does others, which is why his name is on the list.
Last but not least, coming in at number 10—rapper, The Game. Of course we all are aware of his long Discography. We also know about his new reality show She Got Game, which will be interesting because them “LA n*ggaz be the craziest”. Not to mention, his album the Documentary 2, which is the sequel to The Documentary, should be released sometime this month, according to him. Game’s name will always be talked about in anything that West Coast-related because, you see, “when the doubts was out, who gave the West Coast mouth to mouth”. Now, while your trying to find your answer, make sure you check out his new track, 100 featuring the “singing nigga”, where he and Drizzy relay such a powerful message to the Haters. In fact, the message was so touching, that even the Love-this-track family is contemplating on adding to the rule book. Fire!
