Among the new wave of emerging female emcees is Philly native, Lee Mazin. Born Taliyah Smith, she always had an affinity for music and for writing, whether it be short stories or poems. However, it wasn’t until five years ago, while freestyling with friends that she was encouraged to pursue music. In 2012, Mazin signed with Meek Mill’s label,
In 2012, Mazin signed with Meek Mill’s label, Dream Chasers, alongside acts such as Lil Snupe and Louie V. Gutta. The pair eventually parted ways and Lee Mazin became an independent artist. Working hard over the years, she has managed to gain a ton of support from acts like Remy Ma, Trina and the legendary, MC Lyte. Accompanied with these co-signs were some features and a spot on MC Lyte’s tour. Continuing her consistency, she released her mixtape, Vibes, which followed up last year’s project, No Love Lost. Aside from rapping, Lee Mazin also sings and produces. Her style is very versatile and there are hints of a Missy Elliott influence in her cadence. Her song, “Biggie’s Freestyle”, displays the emcees talent in switching from a variety of different flows from slow to fast to moderate. “She’s Got It” is a ladies anthem that praises independent, hard working females. “Ouh Ouh Baby” featuring Remy Ma is a song directed towards the haters and has production that sounds intergalactic.
On top of building a great rapport with various artists in the industry, she has landed a spot on Oxygen’s hit show, Sisterhood of Hip Hop. Not only do audiences get to know the rapper a bit better, but Mazin gets to flex her skills and get personal.
As an independent artist, Lee Mazin has a great resume under her belt. She has headlined her own tour and performed in front of 20,000 people at Philly’s Powerhouse, a huge event in her hometown. At the rate that she is going, Lee Mazin has what it takes to make a real impact in the rap game and be a great representation for Philly.
