This past Friday (Oct. 5), T.I. released his latest project ‘Dime Trap’ in its entirety. The singles that were released ahead of the album, “Jefe,” “The Weekend,” and “Wraith,” are all featured on the track list. This is T.I’s tenth studio album, and his first since signing with Epic Records.
‘Dime Trap’ was initially titled and announced in 2015. Since then there have been several delays. In 2016, T.I. disclosed that he had recorded over 100 tracks for the project and was in the process of narrowing them down. In an interview with XXL Magazine, he stated: “I have to pick… Let’s say 12 to 16 records out of that. I think that’s the most difficult cause you have to figure out what’s the tone. What’s the tone of the project? What’s the message? And how you want to present that energy. And they all like my kids.”
All of the thought that Tip put into the tone and message of the album are evident in the final product. The project explores some of the Atlanta rapper’s biggest life lessons, as well as some of his lowest points. On the track “The Amazing Mr. F**k Up,” T.I. speaks on the mistakes he made during his tumultuous marriage to Tameka “Tiny” Cottle. The upbeat songs on the album do not take away from the fact that it seems to be an extremely personal project for Tip. On the track “You,” he discusses the importance of having morals despite what position you’re in, stating “There’s two things that’s yours // Your body and your sin (gotta claim it).”
The album features collaborations with Meek Mill, Young Thug, YoGotti, Teyana Taylor, Victoria Monet, and many more. It also features a monologue from Dave Chapelle on the first song “Seasons.” T.I. revealed that Chapelle would serve as his conscience throughout the 15-track project.
