Nova Lush is a multifaceted artist who sings across a broad range of musical styles, including r&b, soul, indie, and hip hop. She has practiced music throughout her life. Born and raised in Toronto, she sang in school choirs and participated in afterschool music programs. In addition to being a vocalist, she also plays steel pan, violin, and writes poetry.
Performing music during her childhood was a formative experience for Nova Lush; she states: “I was dealing with a lot of issues in my household and music was my only escape.” Working a full-time job after high school kept her away from her music for a period of time, but she then returned to her music by singing covers in talent showcases. The experience of singing with other talented artists who performed original songs inspired her to dig through her old poetry and craft her distinct sound. Nova Lush is now dedicated to her music more than ever before, busy writing and recording new hits and performing at live concerts.
Nova Lush’s collective output showcases her malleability as a vocalist. Each work has a unique sound, but her poetic nature and soulful voice shine through in all of her recordings. My personal favorite track is “Better,” which is Nova Lush’s collaboration with R&B artist Romeyo Wilson and producer N-Soul Beatz. The single highlights Nova Lush’s range and characteristically rich vocal tone, and the seamless tradeoffs between Lush and Wilson add dimension to the smooth arpeggiating accompaniment throughout.
