Alright! Brace yourself for this Artist Spotlight. Approximately 8:00am Monday morning while driving to the office, I overheard Lanez’s, sweet, sensational tune, Say it. I was happy with how the Canadian Native finesses the beat. I was even happier with how he flipped Brownstone’s original concept. The flow was so smooth that I had to turn the volume up! He connected his lyrics with Brownstone’s hook so well. Obviously, he has been trending everywhere because some of our colleagues have been talking about him as well. In fact, all social media outlets such as Twitter, Facebook, and Instagram have all been trending with his music.
So who is Tory Lanez?
Tory Lanez is an aspiring rapper from Ontario, Canada. He had been rapping since he was adolescence, but it wasn’t until 2010 he would see his breakthrough. He had been putting in heavy work on his own YouTube channel, which then caught the attention of artist, Sean Kingston. From then on it was pretty much sweet sailing for the Canadian Native because he would go on to record a total of three mixtapes– Just Landed, One Verse One Hearse, and Mr. 1 Verse Killah that same year along with signing to Kingston’s label, Time is Money ENT. However, The year 2014 was his breakout year and he has managed to develop some good connections—YG, and Meek Mill, to name a few. A few months ago he appeared on the Sway show and simply assassinated Tupac’s Amibition of a Ridaz instrumental. Earlier this year, he released his Cruel Intentions, EP. His singles Say It and B.L.O.W. are heavy on the airwaves also.
Do everyone remember when Drake said, “ I was runnin through the 6 wit my woes. Ok, Awesome! Now, Lovethistrack is not sure whether or not Lanez was running with Drake, but he has been giving the world a similar formula as Drake did. That formula involves dual musical mechanisms where rapping becomes primary and singing becomes secondary. Therefore, we got to add him to the roster and while he may not have been running with drake, it’s quote obvious that there was an influence somewhere, considering his style of flow, collaborations, fan support, and YouTube views he currently has.
Do he has what it takes to be number 1?
As the world expands, music changes. From a 90’s baby perspective, we feel that there aren’t many rappers out there who can flip a 90’s track and re-create a new feeling Of course, there are some musicians that have made attempts, but honestly, its been challenging, and I mean challenging for Old-heads to really feel it. However, Tory Lanez possesses that ability and Say it, proves it. As long as he keeps making music that’s easy to relate to, his potential will be infinite. While the world awaits his album, which has yet to be mentioned, check his tour dates out below.
