The R&B genre has been suffering for a few years with hip hop taking the forefront. A multitude of rappers have been making a name for themselves while the R&B genre is lacking groups, as well as, originality. However, this new wave of soul artists are breathing new life into the genre, offering an eclectic style and vocals.
A new artist on the rise is 23 year old singer and songwriter, Miloh Smith. With humble beginnings in Marietta, Georgia, Miloh comes from musical roots as her mother was a part of a band. She sang in her high school choir as an alto up until college, but music didn’t become her career choice until age 20. In 2012, her first EP Suite 404 was released and two years later, she dropped her second mixtape named after the acclaimed Quentin Tarantino film, Pulp Fiction. Her third EP, Deer, is set to drop sometime this year.
From the music that Smith has dropped so far, she is very multi-dimensional. Her song “French,” from Suite 404, offers a smooth and sexy vibe, while showcasing Smith’s higher vocal range. “Inextrication” from Pulp Fiction is very mellow, dreamy and reminds me of a day at the beach. This song is very reminiscent of Erykah Badu, an influence she later grew to love as she got older. One of her most recent songs, “Pretty Dirty” ft OG Maco lends itself to a very spacey feel with kick drums and autotune. The autotune isn’t too much that it takes away from her vocals, but just adds to the vibe of the song. She flexes her rapping skills on “Baby Miloh Two,” adding to the list of talents she possesses.
All in all, she sounds like three different singers on each song, which is pretty impressive and exhibits her versatility as an artist. From her minor introduction, Miloh Smith brings her A-game across the board as far as lyrics, vocals, and production is concerned. Adding her name to the list of a growing number of new R&B artists, the genre has what it takes to become a major threat like it was back in the 80s and 90s. Hopefully, Miloh Smith’s talent continues to soar to new heights because she definitely has what it takes.
