An advocate for body confidence and individuality, Lizzo, the self-proclaimed “America’s Next Top Bop Star” is making big waves in the music industry as of 2018. With five indie hip hop groups and two studio albums on her belt, Lizzo has the look, the talent, and the experience to finally receive the attention she deserves.
Lizzo grew up in Houston, Texas. In 2011, she moved to Minneapolis, Minnesota where she began to perform with an indie group and formed her own all-female hip-hop/R&B group, The Chalice. Though their first album We Are The Chalice was semi-successful, it wasn’t until Lizzo’s debut album, Lizzobangers, that really put Lizzo on the map. The album was critically acclaimed. MusicOMH’s Dylan Kilby gave the album 4 stars out of 5, saying it was “a triumphant album by an extraordinary artist and woman, whose girl-empowering lyricism and social consciousness puts her at the top of the underground and alternative hip-hop community.” In November, Time called Lizzo one out of the fourteen music artists to watch in 2014.
In 2015, Lizzo’s second studio album Big Grrrl Small World was released, followed by her first solo EP Coconut Oil in 2016. Coconut Oil was her first major-label release since it was released by Atlantic and Warner Music. It was number 14 on Rolling Stone’s list of the “20 Best Pop Albums of 2016”. The lead single from Coconut Oil, “Good as Hell”, has over 17 million streams on Spotify and was featured in the film Barbershop: The Next Cut.
With all this experience on her belt, Lizzo has all the potential in the world to really hit it big and finally receive the attention she deserves.
