Manhattan born, Harlem raised artist Melii is rising through the ranks of the music industry as a bilingual singer/rapper. Her first break out song was a new and fresh remix to Cardi B’s Bodak Yellow in 2017 where she showcased her melody but also her ability to be aggressive in her raps. The video quickly went viral and lead to her record deal with Interscope.
Melii’s path to success came with many challenges, as she faced abusive managers, an accidental shooting of her friend, and resulting mental health problems in the early stages of her career. Music was always the thing that kept her inspired. As a student in high school, she would often times skip class to go to the music department at the school and practice her craft. She always explains her appreciation for her music teacher, Albert, and his guidance. After she dropped out of high school, against the wishes of her Dominican mother, she became fully involved in music. The release of her biggest songs to date such as “Icey” in 2018 propelled her deeper into the music industry.
This World Star Hip Hop exclusive shows off her sassy and savage personality on a deep toned beat that can easily find its way into the club. Melii would go on to work with other notable rappers such as Tory Lanez, A Boogie wit da Hoodie, and Meek Mill. This would all build up to the release of her debut album, Phases, on march 27, 2019. Her music is influenced by artists such as Nicki Minaj, Rihanna, and Jhene Aiko but also maintains a unique Spanish presence through Spanish lyrics.
This proud Latina has the versatility to occupy multiple spaces in the music industry. Melii’s ability to attack a heavy trap beat and harmonize with a soft and slower tone, all with an acrobatic display of bilingualism show how equipped she is to perform in this rap game as an original artist.
