For years now, Drake has been doing a great job of helping rising artists achieve more exposure…maybe because he is one of the biggest artists on the planet. One of his latest features is a 20-year-old R&B/soul singer named Jorja Smith.
Born in the United Kingdom, she is one of the many artists expanding their work to the United States right now. She has been gaining a following for the past couple of years in Europe, and it seemed only a matter of time for her to reach the States. Getting featured on “Jorja’s Interlude” & “Get it Together” from Drake’s latest project “More Life” definitely helped her gain more traction. Drake has also collaborated with The Weekend when he was coming up, as well as Partynextdoor and Division. If the successes of these artists have been any indication, Smith may become more known in the upcoming months.
Smith exudes soul through her tracks and brings sort of an “old school” vibe similar to the likes of Amy Winehouse. She has said that one of her influences is Lauryn Hill, which is also apparent as she provides meaningful lyrics of storytelling and social issues.
She just dropped the cinematic visual for her latest single “Teenage Fantasy” which is in a black and white aesthetic. It will be interesting to see what she releases in the future as she has gained quite some hype this year.
