Bryan James Sledge is an artist from Chicago, currently signed to Motown Records. BJ The Chicago Kid was born in a church family to two choir directors, getting into gospel music at a very young age. At 19, he moved to Los Angeles, sparking his career in music. He’s been active since the early 2000s, but his more recent work has been making strides.
In 2009, BJ released his debut mixtape, A Taste of Chicago. Hits like “Make It Right” and “Denial” introduced us to his smooth R&B vibes. He followed the tape with The New Beginning, released a few months later. In February of 2012, BJ independently released his debut album, Pineapple Now-Laters to critical acclaim, being featured on Complex’s Best Albums of 2012 list. The album showed off BJ’s own modern soul and R&B, Good Luv’n is a must listen.
Over the years, BJ has also built up a long list of features with many big artists, for example, Kendrick Lamar, Ab-Soul, and Joey Bada$$. He’s even teamed up with some hometown favorites like Vic Mensa, Chance the Rapper, and most recently with Donnie Trumpet on his album Surf.
