On October 21st, Jaden Smith revealed the title of his next project. Over one month later, he has delivered on his promise, and released ‘The Sunset Tapes: A Cool Tape Story’ this past weekend (Nov. 17th). This is the third installment in Jaden’s ‘Cool Tape’ mixtape series, which started back in 2012, when he released ‘The Cool Cafe.’
Jaden Smith’s eccentric sound takes control on ‘The Sunset Tapes: A Cool Tape Story.’ From the very first track, it is evident in the musical production and the lyrical expression that this is a personal album to Jaden. In an interview with Beats 1 Radio, he stated:
“The Sunset Tapes are really important to me because I’m obsessed with the sunset, and I need to watch the sunset every single day. I feel like it restarts my whole life when I watch the sunset. It’s like I’m watching the world start over, and I just need the sunset for some reason, and it has this weird connection with relationships and love almost because it’s like the sun sets, and then you’re like, ‘What do I do? Who am I gonna spend time with?’ It’s dark now. It’s almost like programmed into humans where it’s like, alright, it’s dark. I need to find shelter. I need to find loved ones and food.”
The 11-track album comes almost exactly four years after his release of the previous mixtape installment. Jaden has experienced a lot since then; from dropping his debut album to establishing his status as a fashion icon, he has grown a lot since 2014. When asked what caused this display of vulnerability and raw emotion, Jaden said that the album was dedicated to:
“I dedicate this album to the Females in my life, from the pretty girl crossing the street that I never got a chance to talk to or get out of my head, to the girls that I see in my favorite movies that are way out of my league and unaware of my existence. Even my Xs–the ones I’m in communication, and the ones that I’m not. All those times by The Beach, in The Hills, in The City, or in The Valley listening to the Beatles, thank you, I love you. Thank you to the girls that I never had a chance to call my girlfriend, but I always wanted to (I had never been to an art auction, thank you), you inspire me. I’m sorry for messing up too early and apologizing too late (Eve). These projects are dedicated to You, an audible representation of how You make me feel, wherever you are half-way across the world, unaware that you’re my everything. Every time you see the sun settle, pour a glass of champagne, and cheers to all those pink skies that we cried and watched together on the overlook next to your house, or the drunken bus rides to forever (Distant). Without all these beautifully painful memories, I would never be able to release 3 projects in the matter of 365 days. Thank you to every single Woman in the world for inspiring me—the ones that I know personally and ones that I can only see from a far—I would be nothing without You. I love You.”
